03/01/2005 - Marathon Icons
I chatted with a few Mac people, asking if they liked Marathon. I was somewhat chocked when some of them replied that they never played it! I just couldn’t believe that there are Mac users out there who haven’t played Marathon, because to me they go hand in hand. Although I was too young to really appreciate the first Marathon that much, me and my friend were nuts over Marathon 2 and we even made new levels and enemies for it.
Some of you might know that Marathon recently celebrated it’s 10th anniversary. I read a good article at a swedish Mac news site called MacNytt about it, and I got inspired to play it again. This time I played trough Marathon 1 and I took the time to read the Terminals to learn the story as well.
Anyway, this inspired me to make a set of icons. I’ve recreated the original icons, but in full 128×128 pixel glory. I’ve tried to stay as true to the original icons as possible and I’m really happy with the result. There’s a total of 33 icons in 3 sets, one for each game.
Go download my Marathon Revisited Icons!
These icons are ment to be used with the open source Marathon project, Aleph One.
Aleph One runs under OS X and even has new features over the original games such as Open GL rendering, cross-hair and a third person view.
For additional Marathon Aleph One downloads such as remastered music, remade high resolution textures and scenarios, visit the Lh’owon Ar’kives.
There are instructions in the Read Me bundled with the icon set on how to replace the icons for Aleph One.
If you have any cool Marathon stories or tips you like to share, post a comment!

i used to love marathon, even though it scared the crap out of me. i remember being terrified
I love you. I have been hoping for a decent 32-bit icon for a while now. Now all we need is a version of Aleph One that has a working HUD and I’ll be back in business…
Marathon (and Marathon II: Durandal even more so) is the greatest shooter for its time, ever released, on any platform, and I pray that Bungie is considering an expansion under the Marathon brand. Even though it will come only to M$Box, it’s better than not coming at all.
Nice. This inspired me to download the latest Aleph One, then get out my old M2 and Infinity files to go along with it. (Had to do a little converting of the shapes/sounds/etc. files with some applescripts, but it worked). I even downloaded the M1A1 (Marathon 1 for Aleph One) conversion set.
With enough skill in file-hackery (which I don’t have), perhaps the Aleph One application can be made to recognize itself as a separate entity, and the support files can likewise be modified to match. Once they no longer identify themselves expressly as Aleph One files (or the program as Aleph One), there shouldn’t be any problem in designating different icons for them in the Package Contents… right? (Taking it a step further, perhaps these modifications could be implemented in some kind of conversion applescript…?)
Also, while this set is wonderful, I’d like to see two types of additions: application folders (to replace the old Classic ones), and Physics Model folders for M2 and Moo. Just a thought.
Actually, I ran into the same problem with the different games using the same icons. I have an ok solution for it:
In the PkgInfo file for any OSX app, should be one short string of eight letters. The first four letters are “APPL”, the application’s file type. The second four are the application’s creator code, and this is what distinguishes the application from others as far as icons, etc, are concerned. For Aleph One it’s “26.A”.
Marathon used to have “26.2″, M2 had “52.4″, and Infinity had “26.?” (that last character is option-5, the Infinity sign)
Basically all you’ve got to do is replace that code in at two places: PkgInfo, and a tag near the bottom of Info.plist.
Info.plist also lists the different file types the application looks for, and you can change them as appropriate, though it’s not really necessary; files of the same file type with different creator codes will take on the icons designated by their creator, so the file type can stay the same.
If you follow these instructions, you can make an Aleph One app for each game. Then to get the game files to use the proper icons, use Get info on each document and choose the appropriate game and the icon will change. This solution does not affect save files or replays, they will all have the same icons.
I got this info from Forrest Cameranesi who made the Forever scenario.
Btw, Marathon is now free for anyone to download:

All I can say is - wow.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
You’re bringing back a whole part of my life.
I spent whole nights playing Marathon on my old Mac. I never felt the same with an online game like I did on Marathon. This atmosphere. This story… chilling. I missed school sometimes, so that I could just play. I would pull the blinds down and pump up the volume in order to “recreate” all the atmosphere.
It was my most fascinating gaming experience. I guess we’re only young once

Three rules for the spam game:
1) you can not win.
2) you can not draw.
3) you can not leave the play.
