04/07/2005 - Problems with “guiKit://” links

I keep getting quite a few emails about people having problems downloading my themes because of the “guiKit://” address. If you have installed ShapeShifter, this link should open up the ShapeShifter preferences panel and download the theme. If it doesn’t work, try reinstalling ShapeShifter.

If you for some other reason want to download theme outside of ShapeShifter, copy the address of the download URL into your address field, for example:

guiKit://www.maxthemes.com/themes/downloads/tiger/Aluminum%20Alloy%201.7.guiKit

and replace the “guiKit://” with “http://”, like so:

http://www.maxthemes.com/themes/downloads/tiger/Aluminum%20Alloy%201.7.guiKit

While having the address field selected, hold down the Option (alt) key and hit return to force download the theme.

Well, I sometimes download the guiKit and using GuiKitty and GuiKit2dlta I make a .dlta theme that can be used with Theme Changer. Now when you can download a .pkg download (thanks Max!) it’s not needed, though.

I simply don’t like the haxies because they are in my system (no they can’t affect it, I know), and don’t work with all apps like VISE installers and so + you have to install 2 prefPanes - that Ape prefPane and the ShapeShifter one and moreover it’s for $15 when you can have it for free. I don’t think changing a theme via ThemeChanger is dangerous - yes it replaces some files in system but I believe it is completely safe - and free.
